Methoni is a sea side small town in the Messinia Prefecture, known from Homeric times as Pedassos.

Methoni’s castle is one of the most beautiful and largest castles in the Mediterranean, built over ancient walls. This imposingly castle was built in the 13th AC by the Venetians. During the ages it was concurred by many nations as the Francs, Venetians and Othomans because of its strategic place in the naval roads between East and West. A characteristic architectural construction in the Methoni’s castle is the Bourtzi, which is a small on the sea fortress. Other constructions in the castle are the church of the Savior, the Morozini column, arsenals, ruins of byzantine rhythm, Turkish bath ruins and building relics.

The isle of Sapientza is the most beautiful island of the Oinousses complex. The island is a very significant viotopos ( biotope )and it is integrated in the Natura 2000. In the northest end of Sapientza, at the Karsi Cape, there are remains of many sinkings. There, the diving funs will have the opportunity to live unique experiences. In the Sapientza isle, there is a controlled hunting refuge with Kri-Kri, mouflon ( wild sheep), pheasants and partridges. The hunting is allowed from October till Dicember.

The Saint Onoufrios cemetery is a unique sample of paleochristianic era. The catacombs are carved into the natural rock from which stone material was extracted to build the castle. In a close distance is located the byzantine church of Aghios Vassilios ( Santa Claus ). The temple was built in the 11th century and it is in an excellent condition. It is worth it to pay a visit the ruins of Saint Leos, the underwater settlement of the medieval copper era in the Methoni moorage, the Kapodistrian school, the arched stone built bridge which is nominated and declared historic and preserved monument and the 2 venetian wells, one in the Limarizi square and the other in Syngrou square.
